Ecohouse Design Competitions

We have been on the panel of assessors for this student competition since 2007 to design an Ecohouse to a specific brief.
The popularity of the Ecohouse Competition has soared with more than 167 entries received from 28 countries including,
USA, Japan, China, Iran, Germany, Italy, Hungary, Singapore, South Korea, Chile, Brazil, and of course, the UK. Its
increasing popularity illustrates the level of research by universities and individuals to actively realise solutions to our
housing needs.

Foreword from Professor Sue Roaf

The 9th International Student Ecohouse Design Competition has now been launched, and the Brief is available below. The talent, imagination and expertise displayed by students in past competitions is illustrated by the excellence of the submissions we received in the 2008 competition (see link below). The prize winners over the years have included extraordinarily talented young designers from around the world, hailing from Cuba, Myanmar, Slovinia, Russia, Britain, Switzerland, Montenegro, Libya, China, Iran, Iraq, America, Brazil, Argentina, Japan and many other countries.

What has grown year on year is the quality of the presentations and the general level of the science on show. I think in part that this reflects the power of the internet to connect and affect the ways in which we learn and understand.†Whatever the causes it is amazing to see the ability of simple Ecohouse designs to change the way we understand buildings in their local and global environments and in the lives of the families and communities who occupy them. I think the Ecohouse movement is a really
effective movement for change and these young people are fantastic 'agents of change'. Well done to all those who have submitted in the past and we are looking forward to the 2009 crop of brilliant, original and environmentally responsible Ecohouse designs.
